Fresh Springs

Monday, April 21st, 2014

And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham… And Isaac’s servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.

Genesis 26:18-19 KJV

Isaac sought to reopen the wells his father had dug years before…  Hard work, no doubt, since the Philistines had “stopped them” – likely filling them in with dirt and debris.  What once brought life-giving waters to man and beast had become useless through time, neglect, and the work of an enemy.

Ah, but so it often is with us… We experience the life-giving waters of fellowship with Christ – feasting on the Word, drawing near through worship, pouring out our hearts in prayer and enjoying time with His people.  But life gets busy, painful, complex, and the road we travel gets weary, difficult.  As life takes its toll, we allow the enemy to fill in those wells of fellowship with the dirt and debris of fatigue, neglect, disappointment… and we suffer for it more than we realize.

GOOD NEWS: wells can be re-dug Isaac’s servants “digged again,” and so can we.  Just as they located the place where blessing had flowed and then set to work, we too can focus our time and passion to reopen the wells of fellowship with the Lord.  And they found a “surprise” blessing in the process:

SPRINGS of Water!

In Hebrew, the term translated “springing water(Gen. 26:19 KJV) is “chay mayim” – literally, “living water.”  When Isaac and servants were faithful to do what they could – returning to and reestablishing the place of former blessing – they discovered a much greater blessing: a spring of living waters (flowing, gushing waters).

I believe the same is true for us: if we “repent and do the first works” (see Revelation 2:5) of love and fellowship with the Lord, He will be faithful to pour out afresh the Living Waters of His Spirit as Christ prophesied in John 7:38.

The Enemy Wasn’t Exactly Thrilled

If you read the rest of Genesis 26, you’ll see that Isaac’s enemies contended with him over the spring of waters – and the enemy will often do the same with us!  He hates it when God’s children experience personal revival through renewed fellowship with Jesus.  He may contend with you through distractions, temptations, or other attempts to pull you away from the living waters – but don’t be movedStay in your rightful place of authority, fellowship, and closeness to the LordMeditate on His Word, worship at His feet, tell Him all your troubles, and receive His love for you each and every day.  Keep seeking Jesus, and He’ll cause His living waters to flow TO you and then THROUGH you, as you enjoy His presence.

May the Lord bless you with His presence and power this week,

Pastor Matthew Casey

Time to Return

Wednesday, April 9th, 2014

Return to the Lord your God,

For He is gracious and merciful,

Slow to anger and of great kindness;

And He relents from doing harm.

Joel 2:13 NKJ

I believe the Church’s greatest need today is to return to the power and presence of the Lord…  To lay aside the “many things” we’ve labored over like Martha, choosing instead “the better part” with Mary: to sit at Jesus’ feet, hear His voice, enjoy His fellowship.

Sure, there’s a time to work, minister, run errands, and attend to the details of life on this planet – and we usually make time for those things which feel most pressing.  But if we fail to make time to enjoy the Lord’s presence, we do so to our own detriment and loss.

When was the last time you got quiet – free from distractions and interruptions – and simply sat before the Lord, meditating on His Word, pouring out your heart before Him, enjoying His love for you, and hearing the still, small voice of His Spirit speak to your heart?

Life is painful enough without depriving ourselves of the healing and comfort only found in God’s presence.  The psalmist testified that some hurts only make sense when we spend time with the Lord:

When I thought how to understand this,

It was too painful for me –

Until I went into the sanctuary of God

Psalm 73:16-17 NKJ

And some blessings we request only come to those willing to wait before Him:

For since the beginning of the world

Men have not heart nor perceived by the ear,

Nor has the eye seen any God besides You,

Who acts for the one who waits for Him.

Isaiah 64:4 NKJ

Whatever you or I accomplish this week may soon be forgotten (can you remember what you accomplished 4 weeks ago?  Me neither).  But if we set aside time to seek the Lord and hear from Him, our week will be different.  We’ll still do our jobs, run our errands, interact with people – but our lives can carry the sweetness of Heaven and the touch of God’s grace into every situation and circumstance we meet.

May God give us a hunger for His nearness like never before… May we seek Him with all our hearts, and not turn back until we know we’ve heard His voice and been transformed in His presence.  O Lord, make us seekers of Your heart – help us make our first love our first priority (Revelation 2:4)

All for Jesus,
