The idea of “tomorrow” has been a big theme in music over the years.  For instance:

 * Little Orphan Annie sang about how much she loved tomorrow in the 1976 stage play (“Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya’, tomorrow…”), because it was “always a day away.”  Personally, I don’t see why that’s a reason to cheer, but Annie felt otherwise.

 * Ol’ Blue Eyes (Frank Sinatra) took a different approach in 1965, singing “Let’s forget about tomorrow, let’s forget about tomorrow, let’s forget about tomorrow, ’cause tomorrow never comes.”

You can see they’re both admitting the same truth – tomorrow never gets here with decidedly different attitudes.

Why am I babbling thus?  Glad you asked!  Jesus gave us a loving command about how we should view tomorrow:

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

Matthew 6:34

Here’s an inescapable, undeniable, immutable truth: NO one – not presidents and princes, not beggars under bridges – NOBODY knows what tomorrow brings, or whether they will even live to see tomorrow.

You might be thinking, “Gee thanks, Pastor Matt – that’s really encouraging.”

Ah, but it is!  When we realize that ONLY GOD knows about tomorrow, that He’s already taken care of the future’s trials and joys, and that He has PROMISED to work all things together for our good (if we love Him and are called for His purposes – Romans 8:28), then we are free from the bondage of worry about tomorrow.  Whatever comes, it’s in His all-capable hands.

You and I can’t experience tomorrow’s joys, pains, sunshine, rain, or anything else today… yet many Christians live so consumed about tomorrow that they fail to enjoy the day God has given them – which is called TODAY.”  The psalmist reminds us in Psalm 118:

“This is the day that the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”

Psalm 118:24

God desires His children to rejoice in Him, He delights to see us glad in Him, and He deserves to see true joy in our hearts and on our faces – yes, in spite of all the tests and trials that you and I may be going through today – because we know and believe the heart of love that our Father has for us.  We have tasted His salvation, we have seen His goodness, we have experienced His unfailing love to this point – and tomorrow will be no different!

He’s promised never to leave nor forsake us, He’s promised to take us through the flame and flood, and He’s promised us that “Surely goodness and mercy will follow” us “ALL the days” of our lives – and that includes TOMORROW!  (Psalm 23:6)

We must cease allowing the unknown future to steal our experience of God’s joy, love, and presence in the here and now.  God has given you and I this moment, the breath in our lungs, the next beat of our hearts.  Let’s enjoy Him today!  Let’s rejoice in what an amazingly faithful and forgiving Father we have!  Let’s remember and celebrate all the answers we’ve seen, all the mercy we’ve known, all the goodness He’s shown us!  And let’s leave tomorrow with Him.

Much love to each of you today in Jesus,

Pastor Matthew Casey
