Vital Reminders

The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.

Nahum 1:7

This is a challenging time for some of God’s children ~ a “day of trouble” as Nahum described.  For those of us who are going through a dark valley right now – in your health or finances, your marriage or family, your heart or mind – we need to be reminded that God sees, that He cares, and that He is going to help us, no matter how desperate or hopeless the situation seems right now.

I want to remind us of some immutable promises that are as sure as the Cross, as sure as the sinless Blood that flowed to wash our sins away, as sure as the Return of our Messiah and King:

  • You will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living (Psalm 27:13).  When pressures increase and circumstances go from bad to worse, the accuser of the brethren is always there to whisper, “It’s no use – give up!  The future is hopeless, your prayers are useless, and your situation is beyond help.”  At this point you must stand in the authority of a Blood-bought child of God, and swing the sword of the Spirit!

Speak God’s Word remember His goodness, and declare His faithfulness over your future.  It may look very dark now, my friend… but a Day is soon nearing when we will see the Morning Star split the eastern sky, coming in power and glory, and He will settle every score.  Our job is to choose to trust Him now – as a fact, not a feeling – and give Him glory in the midst of this fiery furnace. Remember the command and the promise in the next verse of Psalm 27:

Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!

Psalm 27:14

  • No, the enemy will NOT overcome youWeapons will form, but they will not be allowed to take you down (Isaiah 54:17), and everything that speaks to the contrary is a lie.  I know this feels impossible for some of us to believe – I have been there myself, in that place where your feelings tell you that “Maybe God is good, but He didn’t take care of you this time.”  But I have seen God work EVERY scheme of the enemy, every attack of my foes, every trial and trouble together for my good and for His glory.

I have to tell you the truth, a truth that I’ve tasted and tested in my own life and battles (both past and present): you will come through this fiery furnace without the smell of smoke, you’ll come out of this lions’ den without fang or claw mark.  Our God is MIGHTY to heal, MIGHTY to restore, and MIGHTY to turn your mourning into dancing.  NOTHING is impossible for the God we serve!

YOU are MORE PRECIOUS to the Lord than you know, believe, or could imagine – your worth to the King of all Kings cost Him His very life to ransom you.  Do you think He is going to abandon you now, or leave you in the hands of your foes?  They only assail you so fiercely because you are precious to Him, you’re a tool in His hand, and He has a plan for your life to bring Him greater glory.  Shake off the lies, fears, and oppression of the enemy – stand up in Jesus’ name, proclaim His goodness, and remember how much your Father loves you!

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine.  When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you.

Isaiah 43:1-2

  • You will not be ashamed for following hard after Jesus.  “Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame” (Ps. 34:5).  Anything we lose in earthly value for following and loving Christ will be more than compensated by the privilege of knowing Him, loving Him, and bringing Him glory.  He is our “exceedingly great reward” (Gen. 15:1); you’ll not be the loser for following and obeying your Lord.

“Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed; Neither be disgraced, for you will not be put to shame…”

Isaiah 54:4

It is a serious day in which we’re living, but God’s promises will become all the more precious, and His presence all the more real and constant in our lives as we seek Him.

I want to encourage each of us several things:

 1. Make time to cultivate your friendship with Jesus every day… Anything else is expendable compared to your time with Him.

 2. Be careful what you feed on This world’s voices are all influenced by the enemy (1 John 5:19) ~ the media is spewing out a report contrary to the Lord’s, and God’s people need to use wisdom in what they feed their hearts and minds.

 3. Pursue healthy fellowship with others who love Jesus… This is no time to stay in an unhealthy fellowship where the waters are polluted and the spiritual food is unfit for human consumption.  I know Christians who are staying in churches that they know are sick – where leadership is fleecing the flock, beating instead of leading the sheep, failing to make disciples, walking by human means rather than by the Spirit’s help, operating in pride – and yet they stay there for a variety of reasons (more about this dilemma in an upcoming encouragement).  For now, I will simply say: do not stay in a sick church – it WILL affect your spiritual health if you do.

May the Lord bless, help, comfort, and strengthen you in His great love, plans, and future He has for you.  May He surround you with His songs of deliverance, and show you His mighty deliverance.  And may He give you great grace to surrender all to Him, trust Him with all your heart, and love Him more than ever.

In His amazing love,

Pastor Matthew Casey
