His Love, Our Refuge

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed,

A refuge in times of trouble.

And those who know Your name will put their trust in You;

For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.

Psalm 9:9-10

Your Father will not fail you, your Savior will not abandon you, and the Comforter will never leave you to fight your own battles and work your own deliverance.  Your Deliverer is drawing nigh, and He asks you to put your trust in His perfect love right now, before you see the answer.

Many of God’s people find themselves in such a “time of trouble” like King David was describing in Psalm 9.  If that’s you, then let us pay attention to what David said about our God: in the day of trouble, He is our “Refuge” ~ literally, a high place, secure height, stronghold.”  As we run to Christ in the midst of the battle, He lifts us above the schemes and maneuverings of our foes.

This means that you and I don’t need to fight the battles our way any longer, struggling and striving to make it from day to day.  God doesn’t want us fighting the enemy on a level playing field, trying to fend off every lie, threat, and attack with our own effort.  We can go UP – by faith – to the Refuge of God’s Presence, to the Rock of His love:

When my heart is overwhelmed;

Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.

Psalm 61:2

The flawless love of our Father is that Rock, that high place of confidence and safety.  He who gave His own Son for our souls, who washed away our guilty stains by the Blood of His Beloved, who purchased us with the greatest price imaginable – He will protect us, keep us, and deliver us safe into His Heavenly Kingdom (2 Timothy 4:18).  We are seated in the heavenly places in our Messiah, high above the powers and principalities of this age (Ephesians 2:5-6).  And He has made us more than conquerors in all these things we face (Romans 8:37) through Jesus’ love.

Sometimes you and I don’t feel like conquerors; but then, feelings can lie to us.  At such times we must go back to the unchanging promises of our unfailing God, and remember the goodness of the One who has called us His own.  Let us remember:

 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,

But the Lord delivers him out of them all.

Psalm 34:19

He is going to help you, child of God – for you are precious to Him.  He will keep you safe, direct your paths, open a door which no foe can shut, and move those mountains which block your way.  Your part is to trust Him, and to manifest that trust in praise and thanksgiving.  Confess His goodness, bring Him a sacrifice of praise, and let His love be your song in the night.  Hold on, dear child of God; joy comes in the morning.

 The Lord is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble;

 And He knows those who trust in Him.

Nahum 1:7

May His grace and comfort surround you today,

PS – Thank you to those who have been praying for our ministry transition.  It looks like our timing is being moved forward, and we will be starting our new church (Deeper Life Fellowship) here in Portland sooner than we had planned.  Please continue to pray as we seek the Lord for His wisdom, guidance, provision, and His miraculous power.
